So you’ve built your retaining wall, but you want to make sure it stands the test of time. One of the biggest failings of retaining walls is a lack of waterproofing. Before you backfill your wall with soil or substrate, it’s important you lay down a quality Liquid Rubber DIY waterproofing membrane.

Preparation is key! Clean the wall

Make sure you get the surface of the retaining wall as clean as possible before applying Liquid Rubber DIY Waterproof Sealant. Brush off any dirt, dust and loose mortar and clean the wall with a wire brush, scraper, hose or water blaster. Let the surface dry completely before application.

Smooth the surface

Inspect the wall for any cracks or gaps. The smoother you can get the surface of your retaining wall, the better. To smooth out your retaining wall, use a cement render to fill in any gaps. For rough surfaces you should cover the entire wall or allow for more product and let it dry.

Check the forecast

Before you decide to start applying Liquid Rubber DIY Waterproof Sealant, check the weather. Make sure there is no rain forecast for the next few days before you start, otherwise your waterproofing will be compromised.

Apply Liquid Rubber DIY Products

Apply the first coat of Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sealant to the entire wall with a brush, roller or airless spray equipment. Use Liquid Rubber DIY Reinforcing Fabric over any cracks, holes and gaps and cover with waterproof sealant, ensuring there are no creases or bubbles. Let the membrane dry for at least 24 hours. Once cured, apply your second coat and let it dry for 48 – 72 hours.

Add corflute protection sheet

Install corflute protection sheet across the surface of your retaining wall, sticking it in place with cloth tape. Make sure you overlap the joins to add extra protection for to the Liquid Rubber DIY membrane.

Backfill

Backfill your retaining wall with dirt or gravel, ensuring none go behind the corflute. If a garden bed is being installed, fill the top part with a quality garden soil.

TIP: The Liquid Rubber DIY membrane and protection sheet should extend slightly higher than the finished height of the garden bed or soil.
